Warkworth
and the surrounding area is one of the earliest European settlements in New
Zealand. Many of its features retain the pioneer character. A stroll
around the village, a visit to the Museum and
Kauri Park next
door, a trip to Puhoi, Matakana and Scott’s Landing will all
give
you an authentic glimpse of the pioneer days.
The district has a modern, vibrant feel.
The many vineyards,
cafes,
artists’ studios and shops have a distinctly holiday air
about
them.
What could be more pleasant than relaxing in a sunny
cafe with friends or reading the morning paper over
a cup of coffee?
To
experience a leisurely Wine Tasting Exploration of the district, Warkworth Tours will take you on a guided
tour of the many unique vineyards in the area.
For any nature lover, the Goat Island
Marine Reserve with Its Glass
Bottom Boat are a must to visit.
The outstanding Northern Regional Council
Parks, the Parry Kauri
Park and Museum, horse riding on
Pakiri Beach , the many walkways, Kawau
Island, and water
cruising are not to be missed.
Sheep World is
only 5 minutes drive north.
On a fine day, or warm evening take a picnic
and enjoy one of the beaches or unspoiled parks.
If you feel like a ‘bit of action’, there are three
golf courses,
good swimming, surfing, fishing, scuba diving to suit all levels of experience in some of the best spots in New Zealand with Goat Island Dive and Snorkel, sailing, canoeing on the Puhoi River,
and great walks, all close-by.
In the evening there are many cafes and restaurants
to suit all tastes.
There
are also several really good quality pubs
and the RSA Club where you can meet the friendly
locals. Auckland City is only 45 minutes
drive away for a special night out to see
a show or concert. Ascension
Vineyard & Cafe, Heron's Flight Vineyard and Leigh
Sawmill Cafe have
regular evening guest entertainers and good
food. You will need to book ahead, which
we can arrange.
A tour of the vineyards is a lot of fun,
particularly with a group of friends.
If you are a 'foodie' you must visit
the Saturday morning market in Matakana
Village. The children will love a visit
to the Matakana Country Park where they
can ride the beautiful quiet horses.
Morris
& James
Pottery & cafe is a must
for the ceramic and pottery
enthusiast. Tapestry Decor in
historic Wilson House is worth a visit.
Another
truly outstanding venue for the Art Connoisseur
is Terry Stringer’s Zealandia Sculpture Garden - just brilliant!
